Hannah's Revenge
A new look at one of New England's most controversial women in history, by Juanita Carey.Hannah Duston (born in 1657) was a colonial New England woman who, in 1697, was captured along with Mary Ness during an Indian raid, her baby murdered and the rest of her children lost during the melee, along with her beloved husband, Thomas, who went missing.During her forced journey along the Merrimack River with the Indians and their children, she met up with Samuel Leonardson, a 14-year-old white captive. The boy had been captured long ago, and had traveled with the Indian group. When they reached what is now Penacook, New Hampshire, where the Contoocook River meets the Merrimack, the three took action to regain their freedom and return to their families. Would they fight back, or simply try to flee? Would Samuel side with his new group, or assist the two captive women? Even if they could escape, could they manage to make the trip back home?
